Unattainable Beauty Goals

Society’s idea of physical beauty has changed drastically in recent years. 10-20 years ago, being classically beautiful meant being as thin as possible, having perfect skin, and a symmetrical face. In the past few years, however, those ideas have changed. Although we may think these changes are an improvement, they may just create new unattainable goals for women’s bodies.

As Tina Fey points out in her statement, we have successfully moved past the stick thin image of a woman, but have now moved on to other very specific physical attributes that define beauty.

So maybe Disney isn’t the problem at all. Whether or not they portray women as weak and unintelligent (Snow White, Sleeping Beauty), or as strong and smart (Mulan, Brave), the majority of consumers will watch them. Even as Disney moved the focus from true love (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, etc.) to family love (Frozen, Brave), the films have remained just as popular as always.
